My Art Supply List

+ a few tips

1) The Paper I Use the Most

I use hot press papers that I them buy in large sheets.

The smooth surface of a hot press allows me to scan my images without picking up all the texture found on a cold press paper.

Tips: To see which side of the paper is the correct side to paint on, just hold it up to the light. If the watermark is right side up, that is the side you want to paint on.

I will be cutting this large paper into smaller size pieces, so in order to always know which side is up, I add little pencil marks in each corner as a reminder for future use.

2) The Paints I use

No matter what brand of paints you decide to use, please treat yourself to professional quality paints. They are worth it, the pigments are brighter and will not fade on you!

I use different brands, like:

My Must-Have Colors

  • Ivory Black

  • Permanent Alizarin Crimson

  • Quinacridone Magenta

  • Cadmium Red

  • Cadmium Yellow deep

  • Permanent Yellow Lemon

  • Prussian Blue

Even if you don't have these exact colors, this is a general guideline you can use. With these few colors, you can create so many more!

Here are a few more:

  • Sepia

  • Raw umber

  • Turquoise Blue

  • Burnt Umber

  • Yellow Orcher

  • Green Gold

  • Serpentine Genuine

Having extra colors on hand makes it easier to create the perfect color palette.

I must add that I rarely use a color straight from the tube. I like to mixe up the perfect hue on my palette.

3) The Brushes I Use

I use many different brushes, but If I had to choose just one brush, this would be IT !

  1. Gold Sable #1/2

  2. Flat Shader, Princeton #10

  3. Black Gold, Dynasty #1/2

  4. Princeton, Select,scrit liner #1

  5. Round, Princeton #6

  6. Black Gold, Dynasty #8

  7. Black Gold, Dynasty #6

  8. Le"803 Raphael #1

  9. Le"803 Raphael #2/0

Tips: Even if your brushes are worn and rounded, don't throw them out! They are still perfect for creating softer marks that are not so pointy! I love them most when they have lost there pointedness!

They are also great for mixing my colors.

I also love these Raphael brushes, Le "803" Petit Gris Pur size 1 is my fav.

4) Mixing Palettes

They come in all different sizes, some are plastic some are made of ceramic.

When I start a collection, I research my color story carefully, then I mix the colors I have chosen onto a palette. Each palette holds the colors for one collection. When I am finished will it, I can change up the colors for the next collection.

As I said before, I rarely use a color as is, straight from the tube.

5) Tracing Paper

I use tracing paper to sketch out my images, then transfer them onto the paper. I like using sheets but it also comes in rolls.

6) Masking Fluid

There is a trick to using this product if you don't want to ruin your brushes!

Use an old bar of soap to coat your clean wet brush with soap before you dip the brush into the medium, this will protect your brushes and the masking fluid will clean off easily.

Tips: Add the masking fluid to any area that you want to reserve as white.

Let it dry completely before you start to paint.

Once you have finished painting, and it has dried , you can then use a rubber tool like this one to remove the masking fluid.

You can also use an eraser or even your fingers.
